Chapter Twenty-Three

Florence refused to meet Ranger’s eyes when Ben introduced him at supper. She also avoided Patrick, though he snickered at her for doing so. Since they worked on the ranch all day and slept in the drafty cabin, she could pretend they didn’t exist except during meals.

She couldn’t face them, knowing how she’d behaved. It wasn’t that she was ashamed or anything. She was just a bit uncomfortable with how much they knew about each other’s bodies, without knowing anything about them as people.

The situation continued for the next few days. Ranger’s knowing wink when she accidentally caught his eye made her temperature climb, even through September’s chill. They never spoke, other than, “pass the peas,” so of course they hadn’t discussed her first time or the afternoon when he made her scream, followed by Patrick.

She took quick looks at Ranger when he didn’t know she was watching. Ranger and Ben’s faces were alike, but their bodies no longer looked like twins to her. Ranger’s skin was roughened from working outdoors, and his body was far more massive. His callused hands had small scars and cuts on them. Ben, working alongside, had new cuts every day. His fingers bled as he hadn’t yet developed calluses.

Ben never, ever swore. Ranger did it all the time. Ben used words with more than one syllable. Ranger preferred grunts. Ranger was wild and demanding, while Ben’s loving was always sweet. He took his time, doing things that made her beg him to take her. He would shake his head, smile, and continue licking, sucking, probing, and doing everything but making her scream her orgasm. She felt wicked when she had to demand he take her. Only then would he give her release.

Patrick was always pleasant, though a devilish flirt. His hand or parts of his body would “accidentally” touch her every time he was near. Every morning and evening he asked for a kiss. So far, she’d said no. He’d pout and complain that she was chicken.

There wasn’t that much difference in their ages, just a few years. She sensed his growing frustration. He was a far more capable rancher than Ben, yet Ranger treated him as if he was merely a hired hand. From what she’d learned about life in Texas, it was no wonder Patrick kept his head down and mouth shut.

But the Bitterroot was his ranch, as well as Ben’s and Ranger’s. He should have a greater say in how things were done. She couldn’t talk with Ben about it because she needed privacy. The only time they had time alone was in bed, but the last few nights they collapsed and barely moved until morning. With winter’s blast approaching, there was far too much work to be done to ensure they’d survive until spring.

How would she get through a long, cold, dark winter if her precious books never made it from Virginia City? Even if they did arrive before the snow closed the passes, she had nowhere to put
